Reviews "Lucard is climbing the
ladder of success and notoriety like a caffeinated
red uakari monkey on a warm Peruvian day.
Soon his quick, precise way with the strings
and honest, original lyrics will propel him out of this burg — catch him before
he's famous." |

"Need a break from the
evening news? Perhaps Malcolm Lucard can
help. Titles like "Moonboggle Boogie," "I
don't need a Tattoo," and "Two-headed Calf" reveal Lucard's wayward world view. Sure, he has a serious side too, but he's determined to have
some fun. Recommended for the world
weary. "One of the best new CDs
we've gotten in lately." "Malcolm
Lucard inhabits a wild world of moon colonies, smelly
toes, two-headed calves, senility, human cockroaches and heart attacks. A world
where 'you snore like a volcano' and 'scribbled
graffiti all over my bones' pass for sweet nothings. It's a world of funky
rhythms and musical surprises and power
chords played by trombones . . . Lucard tickles the brain not only with his
stories, but with the melodies that carry them." "Most
of us get sick of songs that get stuck in our heads. The music of Lucard and [his band Irrational Exuberance]
is in my head still, yet amazingly not annoying. In fact, though I only
remember a few lyrics, I find that my mind's
eagerness to replay ie's music a testament
to their quality." "This has got to be one of
the most interesting CDs I have received over the last several months. A
glimpse at the whimsical cover might give you a hint of what's inside. And
what's inside, starting with the first cut, "Moonboggle Boogie," complete with
trombone and banjo, wacky arrangement and
vocals, dares to keep us listening. The second cut slows the pace with the more
normal "Lost" with its thought-provoking lyrics about a man losing
his way driving, and also in a relationship.
"She Wants One" is a chirpy piece
about a woman wanting a baby to the dismay of the man, and ending with a twist.
This is not folk music, but the songs are cleverly arranged and
performed. It was a great change of
pace— My
wife liked this CD, but then she likes weird things. A unique CD that should be
given a listen. |

A Few Words From Malcolm About The CD Making this CD was one of the most fun projects I’ve ever worked on. It was a total blast and an honor to be able to record in the fabulous Western Jubilee Warehouse Theater. After seeing so many great shows — Peter Rowan, John McEuen, Jimmy Ibbotson, Norman Blake — at this unofficial little theater, it was awesome to be able to sit on that stage, surrounded by old guitars, homemade quilts and posters for old western movies, and play my little tunes. |
|||||||
Even better were the folks I got to work and hang with
during the project: Butch Hause at the controls (and also on bass and
drums), Joe Uveges on back-up vox, Dwight Bement on the saxophone, Gina
Abendroth singing gorgeous harmonies, Owen Perkins on guitar, and John-Alex
Mason thowing down slide |
|||||||
In the beginning there was the microphone ... And then there was Gina Abendroth
and she was awesome, singing harmonies on everything from "Moonboggle Boogie,"
"Two-headed Calf," "Pretty in Gray" and "Lost".

Dwight Bement of Flash Cadillac and Continental Kids fame was the badass sax player who played on "Cockroach" and "She Wants One." |

Meanwhile, the WJRC posse of Tyler, Kris, Scott, Kathleen, Dane, Jeff, Lorraine were always keeping it real and fun for the music to flow. These cats really understand what music and good times are all about; no wonder so much great music comes from this tucked-away warehouse downtown. Special thanks to Sean Cayton, Owen Perkins and Scott O’Malley for taking some great pictures of the recording session. |
|||||||
Local bluesman John-Alex Mason has also recorded a fine CD at the Warehouse. He was kind enough to keep the tradition alive and come down and record one cut, first and only take sitting around the can. Here’s us Sittin on Top of the World. Thanks to John-Alex for making me sound like I can play the blues too. |
|||||||
Then came Joe Uveges, who sang harmonies on City Wolf. This is Joe and I getting blown away by Gina singing. |
Later, at Butch’s studio on Brighton, Ernie Martinez added banjo, mandolin and dobro; Jeremy Van Hoy and Andy Holst added bass and tenor trombones respectively. Matt Hause also added bongos on “City Wolf.” |
||||||
Next came putting in all on a CD: The prolific sculptor and painter Steve Wood provided the cover art, while Jenna Shearn made a dynamite layout for the art, pictures and words inside the CD cover. |
|||||||
It’s been said. Every CD needs an Owen.This is ours and we love him. Owen Perkins is simply a true blue musical friend who played guitar on "She Wants One," "Moonboggle Boogie," "Heart Attack Blues" and "Lost." |
|||||||
Pictures by Owen Perkins
completed the package and it was on
to the CD release party back at Western Jubilee. Special thanks to Pat
Carter and Gina Bamberger, Michael Salkind and all the others who made this
CD release possible. |
|||||||
Here’s me and co-producer Butch Hause just before we got ran over by a large, antique truck. I thought for sure that parking brake was on. Anyway, thanks to Butch for making my tunes sound better than they probably should. Butch also played bass and drums on all the songs that had bass and drums on them. |
|||||||
Most of all, thanks to my tattoo, Andrea, to whom this CD is dedicated. |
